Open Mike Eagle pens heartfelt freestyle to MF Doom
L.A. rapper Open Mike Eagle spit some tear-inducing bars in tribute to MF Doom on YouTube this morning. Listen to “For Doom” below, which features an ethereal beat by Detroit rapper and producer, Illingsworth.
In the lyrics, Eagle gets vulnerable about working with the legendary rapper, even though they never got to actually meet in person: “Got two songs with you but only spoke with a go-between / but still proud as fuck to reach ground zero / cause who the fuck ever gets to rhyme with their heroes.”
Those two songs are “Police Yourself,” a parody-track and music video for Open Mike Eagle’s Comedy Central show, The New Negroes, and “Phantoms,” on the Czarface & MF DOOM project, Czarface Meets Metal Face.
Eagle’s freestyle stands in good company amidst a flood of tributes as the hip-hop community continues to mourn the loss of one of its most cherished MCs. On New Year’s Eve, the day that the rapper’s death was announced, Lupe Fiasco dropped a Doom-inspired freestyle on Twitter. Listen below:
