Leave it to punk pranksters NOFX to break all of the rules and release two music videos for a single song. This decision is warranted, however, considering the concept of the music video for their new single, “Linewnewleum.” The first video, which featured footage of 50+ bands covering NOFX’s 1994 classic, “Linoleum” rallied punks around the world. Since the video was such a home run with fans, NOFX released a second video for the song to feature even more bands.

While NOFX has gotten meta about their own music before, “Linewnewleum'' takes that practice to an entirely new level. Fans of 90s skate punk will recognize the song’s call-outs immediately; the riffs and melodies are almost identical to the music on the beloved Punk in Drublic intro track. But instead of surreal and funny one-liners about “a dog named Bob who pisses on my floor,” “Linewnewleum” is NOFX’s attempt at throwing a retirement party for their most popular song.

Some lyrics worth noting include:

  • “Intellectual property never meant anything to me / So, I'm not crazy for trying to pimp out a classic song”

  • “I think I was born into this world to piss people off / So, I'm doin' what no smart band ever would / I'm taking our one well-known song and trying to make it not very good”

  • “Linoleum never meant anything to me / I never even wrote a chorus / Just verses and a bridge”

Here’s what singer Fat Mike said of the track in a press release:

“One night I stayed up till 4 a.m. checking out all the different versions on YouTube. Watching hundreds of bands from over 28 countries (mostly Indonesia) doing ‘Linoleum’ was a humbling experience for me. So I decided to write a song that was a shout-out to all those people that learned those four chords and remembered the non-rhyming lyrics. Then I asked the biggest of all the bands (Avenged Sevenfold) to play some leads on the song. Then M Shadows suggested we do a video together. Then I figured I should put all of the bands in the video. Well, I couldn’t fit all the bands, but I picked a bunch of cool ones! A song about not playing a song that’s not a hit song with a video about other bands covering the song! This is why I love punk rock [and] writing punk songs. Rules out the door!”

“Linewnewleum” will be featured on NOFX’s forthcoming record, Single Album, which is due via Fat Wreck Chords on February 26th.
