Though COVID-19 is making it impossible to drown our sorrows at the local watering hole, The Hold Steady are allowing us to do so in the comfort of our own homes:

Following the release of “Family Farm” back in December, The Hold Steady dropped “Heavy Covenant”, the second single off of their forthcoming record, OPEN DOOR POLICY. The band’s eighth studio album will be released on February 19th on Positive Jams, and Thirty Tigers (Lucero, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit), according to their website.

The song — which paints a picture of a traveling salesman on a bender — has plenty of vivid, juicy lines; here’s a few highlights:

“I sell software made for offices / It increases their efficiency/ Hospitals and local governments / It's a pretty heavy covenant”

And:

“With the wine glass on the microwave / And the ashtray in the kitchenette / I could tell that it was difficult / To bring that sort of subject up”

The track’s vibe aligns with statements the band made about the album’s lyrical themes back in December:

“The songs on OPEN DOOR POLICY are about power, wealth, & mental health. They're about technology, occupation, consumerism, freedom, fandom and escape,” via TheHoldSteady.net.
