Miley Cyrus covers Nine Inch Nails in Black Mirror season 5
A new episode of Black Mirror titled “Rachel, Jackie, and Ashley Too” features not one, but two different Miley Cyrus covers of the Nine Inch Nails song, “Head Like a Hole.”
Cyrus also stars in the episode, in which she plays a young pop star who gets made into a cute, inspirational robotic doll (and obviously, all sorts of AI craziness ensues).
“Head Like a hole,” which was on Nine Inch Nails’ debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, plays a big role in the episode’s plot, serving as the basis for the #1 hit of a fictional pop star named Ashley O (played by Cyrus). The peppy, pop-rework of the song also contains satirical, faux-inspirational lyrics, which were apparently penned by Black Mirror co-creator, Charlie Brooker (and whose tongue was, no doubt, firmly in cheek).
In a recent interview with Billboard, Black Mirror’s co-creator Annabel Jones said that they recieved Trent Reznor’s blessing to use the track:
“He thought it was all very funny. He found all of the dark comedy very entertaining. There are lots of dark concepts in the film and we just enjoyed a childish subversion of them," said Jone (via Billboard).
The episode also features a more traditional, grunge cover of the song with Cyrus on vocals.
Back in May, Cyrus released a new EP titled, She is Coming, which features Wu-tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, and a rap verse by Ru Paul.
